Admission
On this page, you’ll find all essential information about admission at the Postgraduate Center. This way, you know exactly what needs to be done when and can plan your next steps.
If you are an international prospective student, you will also find information on legalizations/apostilles and the evaluation of your foreign educational qualifications. This allows you to take the necessary steps even before applying to the Postgraduate Center.
Admission to a continuing education program at the Postgraduate Center requires successful completion of a selection process. As part of your application, your motivation and goals will be assessed. The specific design of the selection process and the factors informing the admission decision are defined in the respective program curriculum. If you have questions, please contact the relevant Program Management directly.
Application deadlines vary by continuing education program. You will find the exact dates on the individual program pages. For questions about deadlines, please contact the relevant Program Management.
Continuing education programs at the Postgraduate Center are generally offered in German or English.
- Applicants whose first language is not German must provide proof of strong German language proficiency (at least C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR). The Academic Director determines the accepted forms of proof.
- If a program is conducted in English, applicants must provide proof of strong English language proficiency (at least C1 level according to the CEFR). Here, too, the Academic Director decides which forms of proof are accepted.
After you have successfully completed the selection process, you can apply for admission to your continuing education program. You will receive all necessary information about the application submission and the admission process from the respective Program Management once you have been notified of your admission.
All students at the Postgraduate Center receive a u:account. This gives you access to all study‑relevant platforms and provides you with a personal email address.
After you have been accepted into the continuing education program, your Program Management will inform you and ask you to set up your u:account and complete your initial registration in u:space.
Depending on the country in which your documents were issued, legalization may be required. If legalization requirements apply to the country that issued your documents (see link below), your documents must already be properly legalized at the time you submit your application. Legalizations must be affixed directly to the original documents.
Apostille
For legalization by apostille, please contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country. In some countries, the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Education is responsible. The apostille must certify the signature on the original document—not the notary’s signature. If your documents were issued in the People’s Republic of China, you must submit, in addition to the legalized documents, a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Center (APS) of the German Embassy in Beijing.
Full Diplomatic Legalization
For full diplomatic legalization, you will need confirmations from the Ministry of Education (or equivalent) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or, in some countries, the Ministry of Justice) in the issuing country. Finally, the Austrian representative authority (embassy or consulate) responsible for the country of issuance must super-legalize these confirmations. For some countries, super-legalization by the Austrian representative authority is suspended. In that case, domestic legalization by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is required.
Translation
All documents required for the admission process must be translated (after legalization) if they are not issued in German or English. The translation must be completed by a court-certified translator. The translation may only be made after legalization, since the legalization stamps must also be translated.
Further information on legalization requirements and translation, as well as a complete list of countries, can be found here: Legalization and Translation – University of Vienna
Recognition or evaluation of qualifications you obtained abroad can improve your chances on the job market and facilitate access to academic continuing education opportunities in Austria. There are several options:
Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA)
Upon request, ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA issues evaluations of foreign school certificates and higher education qualifications from all countries for professional purposes. You can apply for an evaluation of your school or university degree at asbb.at. The decision on admission to a degree program rests with the respective Austrian educational institution (universities, universities of applied sciences, private universities, universities of teacher education). An evaluation by ENIC NARIC AUSTRIA is recommended for this process but not mandatory.
AST Vienna
AST Vienna offers free counseling on recognition and evaluation procedures for third‑country nationals and for individuals with qualifications from a third country. Counseling includes, among other things, clarifying whether formal recognition is required and whether your graduation documents must meet additional formal requirements, such as a certified translation. Contact details for AST Vienna are available at anlaufstelle-anerkennung.at.
ANABIN – Database of Foreign Educational Qualifications
Independently research your school or university degree on the anabin information portal (German database of recognized higher education institutions worldwide). In just a few steps, you can determine how your degree is classified in the education system and whether your higher education institution is accredited.
Nostrification
Nostrification is the procedure by which your foreign university degree is officially recognized as equivalent to an Austrian degree. Nostrification of foreign degrees is possible at the University of Vienna if the corresponding degree program is offered at the University of Vienna.
After successfully completing the nostrification process, you may, among other rights, use the corresponding Austrian academic degree. For general information and advising, please contact the Office of the Studienpräses at the University of Vienna.
Note: Nostrification is not required for admission to the Postgraduate Center.
Uniport – Career Service of the University of Vienna
Uniport offers third‑country nationals personal career counseling in German and English during their studies at the University of Vienna. In these counseling sessions, you will learn about the legal framework of the Austrian labor market (e.g., residence permit or the Red‑White‑Red Card) and receive useful resources for your job search as a student or graduate in Austria. Counseling is offered on site and online via Microsoft Teams. You can register for a free counseling appointment via the Uniport appointment tool.
