On Thursday, May 21, 2026, Students in the Master’s program in “Human Rights” visited the Wiener Neustadt Correctional Facility with instructor Karin Rowhani-Wimmer and gained practical insights into the Austrian prison system.
Deputy Chief Inspector Christian LANG, who also serves as the Correctional Officer Commander, provided a comprehensive overview of the facility’s organization and structure, took time to answer numerous questions, and discussed current challenges and procedures with the students.
During a tour of publicly accessible areas and the workshops, the students were able to connect theory with concrete impressions, ranging from work and training opportunities to issues of human dignity and rehabilitation. An exciting change of perspective that underscores the importance of human rights-based approaches in the prison system.
The field trip served as a valuable supplement to the students’ studies and enabled them to link theoretical content with practical experience.
